Do I need to have a Montana License?

Yes. Everyone who practices massage therapy in Montana needs to have a Montana license, even if you have a license from somewhere else.

    Applicable Statutes:
37-33-501. License required -- enjoining unlawful practice. (1) As of July 1,2010, a person who is not eligible for a license under 37-33-503 may not practice or purport to practice massage therapy without first obtaining a license under the provisions of 37-33-502.
    (2) A person who is not licensed as a massage therapist under 37-33-503 or this section, whose license has been suspended or revoked, or whose license has lapsed and has not been revived may not use the words or letters "massage therapist", "licensed massage therapist", "L.M.T.", "masseur", or "masseuse" or any other letters, words, or insignia indicating or implying that the person is a licensed massage therapist or in any way, orally, in writing, or in print or by sign, directly or by implication, purport to be a massage therapist. A person who knowingly violates the provisions of this subsection is guilty of a misdemeanor as provided in 37-33-504.

    Can I Grandfather in?

Only if your 100 hours of practice occur inside the boundaries of Montana prior to July 1, 2010 and you turn 18 by July 1, 2010. If you trained at a massage therapy school in Montana and you have enough clinic hours prior to July 1, 2010 you may also qualify to grandfather. Read through the Grandfather FAQs very carefully.

    Applicable Statutes:
37-33-502. Qualifications for licensure. (1) To be eligible for licensure as a massage therapist as provided in 37-33-501, an applicant:

How do I qualify for a license?

If you can’t grandfather (scroll up to the last question to see if you qualify) you can use either of the other two methods of licensing. Read those FAQs carefully:

(get licensed via education and testing).

Click here to go to FAQs for Licensing by Endorsement
(Using your current state massage therapy license to get a massage therapy license in Montana).
