Is my application information confidential or public information?
This question appears directly on the state Massage Therapy Board website. The answer given there: “Most, but not all, of the information on an application is public. If a request is received to access an application, a review is conducted to determine what information is not released to protect an individual's right of privacy. Social security numbers are an example of information that is not public.” Given this, anyone who wants to know including Board members, could find out the method you used to obtain your license (grandfather, examination, endorsement).

Does the Massage Therapy Board look at every application?
This question appears directly on the state Massage Therapy Board website. The answer given there: “Generally, the Board reviews applications that it has defined as non-routine.” FYI: The Board just does not have time to review every application. Employees of the state who are not massage therapists approve most of the applications. If there are applications that don’t meet the criteria for approval, then the Board will look at those.

Will my Massage Therapy license state if I was licensed by grandfathering, education or equivalent licensure?
This question appears directly on the state Massage Therapy Board website. The license number, status, (e.g. "active") and expiration date all appear on the license, but not the method of licensure.”

General Directions for all applicants:
Download your application from the state website: www.massagetherapists.mt.gov (click on the Applications/Forms tab). If you do not have internet access, then contact the Board office administrator: Cheryl Brandt (406) 841-2394.
- If you have any questions as to how to fill out or what to include in the application contact the Board office administrator: Cheryl Brandt (406) 841-2394 or by email dlibsdlmt@mt.gov
- Fill out the application as completely, thoroughly and truthfully as possible.
This is very important. If it turns out that you left something out or lied on your application, the Board could sanction you, and could go so far as to revoke or suspend your license. If someone ever files a complaint against you, as part of the investigation, the Board is allowed to run a background check, and these issues may come to light. A “yes” answer on questions 13-29 does NOT mean that you’ll automatically be denied a license. The Board does take into consideration the circumstances (a $100 speeding ticket won’t cause you to lose your license – question 26). That’s why it’s important to include all of the documentation requested.
- Follow ALL of the directions.
Taking shortcuts or thinking that “they won’t mind” is not ok. All it does is guarantee that the License Permit Technician will contact you to have you do it right. This will delay your application.
- Include every piece of additional documentation that must be included with the application. Contact the persons or agencies that have to send in additional documents. Your application will not be complete until all information is received by the Board office.
The License Permit Technician will contact you if your application is not complete. An incomplete application will delay your license.
